I first met Avery*Sunshine in 2011, opening for Rahsaan Patterson. Sunshine was a beam of sunshine, charismatic, our interview was like old girlfriends sitting catching up on the past, and future plans. She shared the history of her stage name, inspired by the characters “Shug Avery” and “Sunshine” from the film, Harlem Nights. Her live performance was just as personal, the audience participated as she led them in the church service of “Avery*Sunshine” as masterfully as she worked as the choral director on the theatrical production of Dream Girls.
Her self-entitled debut cd, “Avery*Sunshine” released in 2010, Avery*Sunshine and her partner Dana, signed with Dome Records and began to touring internationally. The single, “Ugly Part Of Me“, peaked at 84 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Avery Sunshine has also collected the following awards:
- iTunes Best of 2010
- Soultracks Reader’s Choice Best New Artist
- Jet Top 5 Rising Indie Artists
The sophomore album, “The SunRoom” was released in 2014, with the leading single “Call My Name“. Avery Sunshine visited USA Today to perform the single for during the #LiveMic live show. “Sun Room” has hit number three on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, and also landed on the R&B and Hot 200 charts.
